Changes to Employer Sponsored Occupations Lists Flagged for January 2018

A draft bulletin has been published by the Department of Employment which has proposed certain changes to be made in the skilled occupation lists starting from January 2018.

There is a “Traffic-Light” system introduced in which there are some occupations removed from the skilled occupation lists and some others are to be added in it.

The article will help in explaining what are the occupations removed or added to the lists, and moreover, the impact of the following modifications.

The types of applications which will be affected are employer sponsored 457 and ENS (Employer Nomination Scheme) applications. However, it is quite clear that at this very stage, General Skilled Migration subclasses list will not be affected. The list will be updated in July 2018.

Short Term Skilled Occupation List STSOL would most likely comprise the several occupations which have been flagged to be removed. Following are those occupations:

  • 141999 Accommodation and Hospitality Managers nec
•142114 Hair or Beauty Salon Manager
    •223112 Recruitment Consultant
    •312112 Building Associate

The occupations which would not be on the list are on the skilled list for 457 and ENS visas as the Immigrations have proposed to add these to the STSOL.

  • 242112 University Tutor
  • 272314 Psychotherapist
  • 612112 Property Manager
  • 612114 Real Estate Agent
  • 612115 Real Estate Representative

There is a substantial impact on the ENS direct entry applicants which will make an applicant ineligible if he/she has launched their application after the changes that has been made in January 2018 and the application has been flagged for removal.

But if the applicant has applied before January 2018 then he/she would be eligible and the application would be processed even if the occupation is removed during the pending status.

However if the occupation on the list is removed before the grant of 457 application then the applicant will be most likely affected. If the applicant has submitted the application after January 2018 or even if the application is pending then the applicant might not be eligible for the grant of 457.

It is advised that if your application is on the list for the possible removal then it is best for you to make your application based on your employer sponsored visa. But if you have a 457 visa, unfortunately, then it might be a little late for you to save your application from the effects.

If you are one of the lucky ones whose occupation would be added then you must be in the loop of all the changes to be made as you can apply for either a 457 visa or ENS Direct Entry.

However there is no current plan to make changes to the General Skilled Migration list so if you applied for this program then you are safe for now.

The deadline for the submission to the review is 1st December, 2017 which can be done by visiting the Department of Education website.
